Karl Bornstein, owner and publisher of Mirage Editions, insisted Patrick Nagel created 120 canvases*. Sadly, sales records were lost and some paintings never photographed. Paintings sold out quickly and collectors often paid cash! (Consider a time of only carbon copy receipts with no digital files or scanners!) Other sources had the canvas count firm at 80. With my help and a collaboration of combining resources a catalogue number well over 90 now exists. We will find them. Now April 21, 2026, Heritage Auctions has three more opportunities available for lucky collectors and more have resurfaced. IF YOU OWN A CANVAS CONTACT ME. A true catalogue raisonné is in the works here. If you have one to sell CONTACT ME FIRST!

Blonde in Sunglasses (NC #5), 1983 Original Acrylic on canvas
30 x 30 inches (76.2 x 76.2 cm)
Signed and dated lower right ©1983 Nagel
Original provenance Dyansen Gallery, New York; 1983. Finally resurfaced by original owner at Heritage Auctions in summer of 2024.
(The work is also known as NC#5, as a slight variant of the image was used in the Nagel Commemorative limited-edition serigraph series. The serigraph series drew from Nagel’s most iconic images, of which Blonde In Sunglasses is unquestionably one. This serigraph was created from a version of this image that appeared in the January 1983 issue of Playboy magazine as part of the article “A Guide for Prospective Husbands”. The image also appears on page 125 of The Art of Patrick Nagel (St. James Press, 1985).

Star, 1983 Acrylic on canvas
30 x 30 inches (76.2 x 76.2 cm)
Signed and dated lower right: © 1983 Nagel
This canvas finally resurfaced for the first time at Phillips Auctions September 27, 2023 and then resold Heritage Auctions in May 2024 (too quickly!). An acrylic on board image was published in Playboy magazine in January 1984.

Untitled (Tracy Vaccaro in Polka Dot Dress), 1983 Original Acrylic on canvas
40-1/8 x 25-1/8 inches (101.9 x 63.8 cm)
Signed and dated lower right: ©1983 Nagel
The canvas depicts Tracy Vaccaro, October 1983 Playmate of the Month. This present work became a popular calendar piece, and the board variant of this image was originally published in the December 1983 issue of Playboy. Original provenance New York City’s Dyansen Gallery 1983. This canvas has just resurfaced at Heritage Auctions and is available on April 21 in their Signature Illustration Auction.

Untitled (Tracy with Glove Jagged Edge/Lightning background) 1984, Acrylic on canvas
30 x 25 inches (76.2 x 63.5 cm)
Here she is! I finally found it and it is now resurfaced at Heritage Auctions! One of the last Nagel canvas created, the work was purchased directly from Mirage Editions in 1984 and is accompanied by Certificate of Authenticity signed by Barry Haun, the artist’s studio assistant stating the painting was in the studio of Patrick Nagel at the time of his death. Signed by Jennifer Dumas J. DUMAS. The receipt shows Susan Kay (Yokum Kay) was the gallery dealer sales person. A small acrylic-on-board variant of this image appeared in the February 1984 issue of Playboy. This canvas will be auctioned at Heritage Auctions on April 21 in their Signature Illustration Auction.

Heidi 1983 Acrylic on Canvas. (This image is the placeholder only). This canvas is in the collection of Nick Rhodes, bassist and original member of Duran Duran. I have reconfirmed he still is the owner in April 2026 and I will attempt to get a photo when I am able. I will ask Nick. Model is Heidi Sorenson and it was released by Mirage Editions as a limited edition print. It is one of my favorites actually and can be hung vertically or horizontally.
Canvases published by the estate
Below are canvases confirmed in books and calendars or previously published online by Mirage Editions, the Nagel Estate or by Nagel’s technical assistant Barry Haun (worked directly with Nagel on the construction and creation of all the canvases ’82 until Nagel’s death in ’84). I have not seen the below publicly resurface or been provided a photograph. Dimensions may be unknown. (Note: Many errors exist in “The Art of Patrick Nagel.”) If you have information or photographs to reconfirm or correct any content on this page please privately contact me. I am happy to credit you.

The original canvas is signed lower left and is very different to the acrylic on board seen in Playboy. It to my knowledge has not resurfaced. Model is Lori Sutton.

(color may be punched for web by estate). Model on bottom Jackie Heston. I have confirmed the existence and it is in a private collection in California.

Barry Haun confirms it was created. It has not resurfaced. The above image is a only placeholder using the Estate Edition serigraph released in 1988.

* Sources: Original gallery owner and a best friend of Bornstein from Scattivodd Fine Art Sausalito, Scott Hahn states “Karl insisted 120 are out there”. Just Looking Gallery, San Luis Obispo confirmed numbers easily over 100. They held the Nagel retrospective in 2007 in collaboration with the Nagel Estate.
